Breastfeeding rooms hidden in health care law

Nursing mothers will now get additional support, thanks to page 1239 of the health care bill that President Obama recently signed into law. It requires employers to provide “a place, other than a bathroom, that is shielded from view and free from intrusion from co-workers and the public, which may be used by an employee to express breast milk.” Only companies with less than 50 employees can claim it’s an undue hardship.

New Rules About Breast Pumps at Work
(New York Times, April 9 2010)
There are limits on the new health reform pertaining to breastfeeding and providing a suitable lactation room for pumping. Companies of fewer than 50 employees are exempt if the employer can show that this would “impose an undue hardship,” and employees are not guaranteed pay for time spent expressing milk. There also does not seem to be a requirement that employees be given access to a place where the pumped milk can be stored. And it remains to be seen how the Department of Labor will define “a reasonable amount of time” to pump or an appropriate place to do so.

Local WIC program is recognized for improving breastfeeding rates

The Food and Nutrition Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture has commended the NMI Department of Public Health’s Women, Infants, and Children Program for its outstanding achievement in improving breastfeeding rates among mothers participating in the program.
