New mums told breast is best by hospital chiefs

An action plan has been launched by Chesterfield Royal Hospital to encourage new mums to breastfeed and help them stick with it. The Breastfeeding Action Plan is part of the Baby Friendly Initiative which the hospital trust was first awarded in 2001.

Calhoun County WIC Program now on Facebook

The Calhoun County Public Health Department’s WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) program is proud to announce “WIC Breastfeeding Connections” is now on Facebook. “The goal of this new tool is to provide another means of open communication about breastfeeding with our clientele, as well as with others who may be interested,” states Diana Hazard, WIC Program Manager.

White women of normal weight most likely to breastfeed, study finds

The health benefits of breastfeeding for mothers and babies are widely known. Studies have shown it may improve cognitive development among children and could reduce a woman’s risk of getting breast cancer or cardiovascular disease. But new research suggests that some very obese woman may not breastfeed as much or for as long as their normal-weight counterparts. Read the article here.
Antidepressants linked to breastfeeding delay

New research suggests that children who are breastfed for longer than six months could be at lower risk of mental health problems later in life. Breastfeeding could help babies cope better with stress, and may also signal a stronger mother-child attachment and these benefits may last. Read the article here.
